Buying guide

How to pick work pants

Every pant on this page is built for work. The right one comes down to what you do all day: how much you kneel, how hot it gets, and how much room you want to move.

What's the difference between duck, canvas and ripstop?

Duck is a heavy, tightly woven cotton canvas. It starts out stiff and softens the more you wear and wash it. Lighter canvas pants skip most of that break-in. Ripstop has a grid weave that stops small tears from spreading, and it's usually the lightest of the three, so it's a good pick for hot days or jobs where you're moving nonstop.

What are double front pants for?

Double front pants (some brands call them double knee) add a second layer of fabric over the thigh and knee. If you kneel a lot on concrete, decking or roofs, that extra layer holds up much longer than a single one. Some styles also have an opening for knee pad inserts.

Relaxed, straight, slim or loose. Which fit should I get?

Relaxed fit gives you extra room in the seat and thigh, which helps when you're crouching or climbing. Straight fit keeps the same width from the knee down, so it sits clean over boots. Slim fit sits closer through the leg and looks more like an everyday pant. Loose fit has the most room of all. Use the Fit filter to narrow it down.

How do work pant sizes work?

Most work pants and jeans are sized by waist and inseam, like 34 x 32. A few styles use letter sizes (S to 3XL) instead. Fit changes from brand to brand, so check the size chart on the product page before you order.

Work jeans or work pants?

Work jeans are denim with tougher stitching, reinforced seams and usually some stretch. They work on the job and off it. Work pants use duck, canvas or ripstop and tend to have more utility pockets, like hammer loops and ruler pockets. If you carry tools on you all day, go with work pants.

Do I need flame-resistant pants?

Only if your job has arc flash or flash fire risk, which is common in electrical, utility, and oil and gas work. Employers that require FR clothing will usually name the arc rating you need, so check with your safety lead before you buy. Regular cotton work pants aren't flame resistant.

Can I try them on in a store?

Yes. We have eight shops across California and Nevada, and it's the easiest way to compare fits side by side before you buy.
